Celebrating Diversity: Women in the Law Committee Approved in Delco

By: Lisanne L. Mikula, Esquire
About two years ago, my colleague Pamela A. Lee and I -at the time both relatively new to the Delaware County Bar- were swapping stories about professional organizations in which we had been involved over the years.   Pamela shared with me her experiences with an organization that fostered an environment where women lawyers could connect with one another, share experiences and knowledge, and support one another in their practice.

Looking to become more involved in our local bar association, Pamela and I wanted to share this same experience with other women practicing law in Delaware County.   Pamela and I enlisted the help of a handful of supportive fellow professionals, and this small group founded the Women’s Professional Group.  Over the course of three informal lunch meetings, nearly three dozen attorneys joined our ranks, and the Group planned several events, such as a continuing legal education series focused on business development, a seminar regarding human trafficking, and a networking happy hour.

Based upon the Group’s efforts, on October 19, 2016, the Delaware County Bar Association approved the formation of the Women in the Law Committee. This newly-formed Committee not only reflects the ever-increasing diversity of the legal profession, but it also provides an opportunity for women in the legal profession to work together to achieve their goal of being the best possible advocates for their clients.

As lawyers who represent both clients who have been treated unfairly as well as organizations which strive to be inclusive for all, we see on a daily basis how the failure to embrace diversity can result in needless misunderstandings, costly errors, and squandered opportunities.   The newly-formed Women in the Law Committee serves as a reminder that recognizing, celebrating, and accepting one other’s differences benefit us all.
