Last month the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, Analysis Division released its Large Truck and Crash Facts of 2014.

In 2014, the number of large trucks involved in crashes causing personal injury increased from the previous year by 21 percent, from 73,000 to 88,000 across our nation. Although the number of large trucks involved in fatal crashes fell 5% from 2013, there were still 3,744 large trucks involved in fatal crashes in 2014.

The total number of people killed in large truck and bus crashes in 2014 was 4,161. The total number of people injured (non-fatal injuries) in large truck and bus crashes was a staggering 132,000 people. In Pennsylvania, 162 people were killed in large truck crashes in 2014.

According to the report, at least one driver-related factor-such as speeding, impairment, careless or distracted driving-was recorded for 34 % of the large truck drivers in fatal crashes.

Like all drivers, every truck and bus driver has a duty to drive safely. Due to its sheer size and power, when a large truck or bus is involved in a crash, personal injuries can be devastating. A driver who fails to drive safely and causes a crash is responsible for other’s injuries caused by the crash.

In addition to holding a large truck or bus driver responsible for his or her actions in causing a crash, there could be additional entities who could also be responsible. For example, the bus or truck’s owner or company could also be liable. Further, if the large truck or bus was defective-for example if the brakes failed-the manufacturer of the vehicle or part could also be responsible.

If you or a loved one was seriously injured in a crash which was caused by a large truck or bus, you need the guidance of an experienced attorney to help protect and fight for your legal rights.
