AVOID MEDICAL MALPRACTICE – BE YOUR OWN HEALTHCARE ADVOCATE

According to the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), medical malpractice is the third-leading cause of death in the United States, behind heart disease and cancer. (http://jama.jamanetwork.com/article.aspx?articleid=192541&resultClick=3) According to the British medical journal BMJ Quality and Safety, approximately 12 million adults who visit doctors’ offices or other outpatient settings in the United States – or 1 patient out of every 20 – are misdiagnosed every year, and almost 6 million of those misdiagnoses can lead to serious harm to the patient. (http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/04/17/us-usa-health-misdiagnosis-idUSBREA3G1S820140417) So that you or your loved ones do not become a tragic statistic, we urge you to be your own health care advocate.Here are some helpful tips:

  • Be proactive – not reactive – regarding your own health care;
  • Listen to your body and trust your instincts;
  • If you are experiencing symptoms that concern you, research your symptoms using a reliable on-line source;
  • Record your symptoms;
  • Bring with you a copy of the record of your symptoms and give it to your health care provider;
  • Prepare a written list of important questions that you have for your health care provider;
  • Review that list with your health care provider, and expect – and politely demand – full and complete answers to them;
  • Do not feel intimidated by your health care provider; he or she cannot know your own body as well as you do;
  • Take written notes of your health care provider’s answers to your questions, and everything else he or she says and does;
  • As soon as possible after your visit is finished, promptly record in a diary anything else that you think may be significant, and maintain a file of all paperwork; and
  • For key visits, bring along a family member or close friend to accompany you while you communicate with your health care provider.
  • If you remain concerned, seek a second opinion at once.
