DANGER AHEAD: 2015 Marked Largest Increase in Motor Vehicle Deaths in 50 Years

According to the National Safety Council, 2015 was the deadliest driving year since 2008, with an estimated 38,300 people killed on the roads. What’s worse, the National Safety Council (NSC) estimates that the 8% increase in 2015 motor vehicle deaths from 2014 is the largest year-over-year percent increase in 50 years!

“These numbers are serving notice: Americans take their safety on the roadways for granted” said Deborah A.P. Hersman, NSC president and CEO. Hersman reiterated that driving a car is one of the riskiest activities an individual takes, and she urges people to drive defensively.

According to NSC, the three biggest causes of motor vehicle fatalities are alcohol, speeding, and distracted driving. We at the law firm of DiOrio & Sereni, LLP support NSC: all of these causes are dangerous – and all of them are completely preventable.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warns that crash-related emergency room visits cost on average about $3,300 each, and each hospitalization costs on average about $57,000. Of course, the costs are virtually immeasurable if the crash results in the death of, or catastrophic injury to, a loved one. In Pennsylvania alone, the medical and work loss costs of crash-related deaths in 2013 totaled $1.6 billion.

In return for his or her driving privileges, every driver takes on a duty to drive safely. A driver who violates that duty by failing to drive safely and causes a crash is responsible for the victim’s injuries and other harm and losses caused by the crash. If you or a loved one was seriously injured in a crash that was caused by a distracted, drunk, drugged, speeding or careless driver, you need the guidance of an experienced attorney to help protect and fight for your legal rights.

Our attorneys at the law firm of DiOrio & Sereni, LLP will help you recover full and fair compensation for all of your harm and losses caused by a reckless or careless driver, including lost income, medical expenses, physical pain, emotional harm, and loss of enjoyment of life.
