Presidents’ Day was established in 1885 in honor of President George Washington’s birthday. President George Washington was born on February 22, 1732 (This would be his 293rd birthday!) Here are some fun facts about President George Washington to share on this holiday:

  1. After the Revolution, Washington was offered the chance to become king, but he declined.

2. Washington was not affiliated with a political party. He warned against partisanship in his farewell address.

3. Washington was the only president to win all of his electoral votes unanimously, twice.

4. Although Washington was instrumental in developing plans for the White House and the District of Columbia, he never lived in either.

5. Washington was mostly self-educated. His father died when he was 11 years old and without sufficient money to continue his education, his formal education ended by age 15.

6. Washington was the first person to sign the Constitution of the United States.

7. Washington refused to accept a salary as president and even paid some of his own money to pay the salary of others.

8. Washington was known for his fearless bravery in battle.
